In an effort to foster a lifelong appreciation of the arts, Bay Arts Alliance believes in beginning early through Arts in Education programming. Each year, the programming provides live, quality performances for over 10,000 area school children in grades 1, 3, 5, and 8 at the Marina Civic Center in Downtown Panama City. Children come from all over Bay and the surrounding counties enjoy a variety of experiences including dance, theatre and art at no cost to the student, their parents or the school. We also continue our only one of its kind programming in partnership with Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center. Due to the generous support of our sponsors and members, Bay Arts Alliance is able to make a lasting impression on local children through invaluable arts and culture experiences.  Bay Arts Alliance will be presenting the following performances to our students:

Arts In Education 2007-2008 Schedule

October 25th, 2007 - Northwest Florida Philharmonic - 5th grade show

Northwest Florida Philharmonic

The Philharmonic of Northwest Florida and Bay Arts Alliance are teaming up to “Raise Scores with Scores” for Bay District Schools’ fifth graders. The program will consist of preparatory lessons within the schools before the October 25th performance that will familiarize children with the technical, historical and communicative significance of music. The curriculum, prepared by conductor David Ott along with educational professionals will tie directly to Florida’s “Sunshine State Standards.” The culmination of the studies will be a grand performance by the Philharmonic at the Marina Civic Center. Children in the fifth grade are preparing to choose electives in middle school. There is no way better to introduce them to music than a performance of excellence! Studies have proven that studying the arts reinforces other academic disciplines, thereby raising test scores. In the days of FCAT, who doesn’t want that? An academically and emotionally uplifting program for our next generation of performers and music lovers – “Raising Scores with Score”.

The Dallas Brass

The Dallas Brass includes an unprecedented educational component with each performance to educate and inspire local student musicians. The music students of Bay District Schools will spend the afternoon with the Dallas Brass musicians in rehearsals and clinics, then take the stage to perform with the Dallas Brass during the evening performance. “This will be an evening of music this community will not soon forget,” says Michael Levine, Dallas Brass founder and trombonist.

February 15th, 2008- James and the Giant Peach - 3rd grade show

James and the Giant Peach   Deaf Theatre Adaption by William Morgan based on the book by Roald Dahl.

James Trotter's life was great until a rhinoceros came and changed everything! Suddenly he was an orphan sent to live with his mean Aunt Spiker and cruel Aunt Sponge. One day while working in the garden, a mysterious man gives James a gift that changes his life again and it involves a magical peach. Join James on his exciting adventure inside the biggest peach the world has ever seen! As he leaves behind the sadness of his life with his vicious Aunts, James sets forth on a journey with larger than life-sized insects. With the wise old green Grasshopper and the eternally pessimistic Earth-worm, among others, James sees oceans and cloud makers; is towed through the sky by seagulls; and creates a stir in the "Big Apple" when the gigantic peach lands on the Empire State Building. James and the Giant Peach is a tale of friendship, love, sadness and triumph.

"Well done! Loved it! Great humor! Moved well! Costumes/scenery were creative and colorful. Good for students to be exposed to two languages at once.”
   -The Columbia Dispatch

Sign Stage on Tour is a specialist in Sign Language Theatre where deaf and hearing actors perform together on stage. Whenever a character speaks, the character speaking uses Sign Language but you’ll always hear the voice too. The voice comes from a different actor speaking through a microphone, sometimes on-stage and sometimes off-stage. Visually, the stage is filled with the movement of hands and bodies yet every word is spoken to make sure all audience members, both deaf and hearing, don’t miss a thing. It’s a magical blend of language created when performing a play simultaneously in spoken English and in the spatial beauty of American Sign Language.

In the younger grade levels, students will see familiar stories leap from the page to the stage, making meaningful connections between reading and understanding. James and the Giant Peach is performed by the Sign on Stage Players and every word of the script is not only spoken but also performed in sign language simultaneously. The performances for fifth and eighth graders focus on music at a critical time in the educational careers of students. Fifth graders are preparing to enter middle school where they will have the opportunity to pursue a musical instrument in band. Eighth graders are at the point of determining whether or not to continue with band when they transition into high school. In addition to the school day performance of the Dallas Brass, students in school band programs will be offered a free band clinic the afternoon of the performance and will perform on stage with the Dallas Brass in an evening public performance.

In addition to the Presenting Arts Series, Bay Arts Alliance will be presenting the Dallas Brass the evening of December 7, 2007 and comedian, Wayne Brady on February 7, 2008 in conjunction with our Arts in Education programming. Your attendance at these events will also provide support to what we believe is a vital part of our programming.
